Obama and "the Bomb that Fell on Pearl Harbor"

Submitted by Jeff Emanuel on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 10:45am.

From The Weekly Standard's Dean Barnett:

Barack Obama delivered a speech in West Lafeyette, IN on Wednesday and once again mangled some well known historical facts:

Throughout our history, America's confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Americans have adapted to the threats posed by an ever-changing world.

Aaah yes – "the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor." Who can forget that? It was the big one, the one that took out all those boats. I guess Obama's political correctness prevents him from noting someone actually dropped "the bomb" and it didn't just fall.

This is a surprising error for a Hawaii native (via the great Kansas heartland) to make. Perhaps Obama was merely confused, as he and his surrogates so often accuse John McCain of being.

"The bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor"? Does Barack Obama know anything about American history? Look, I realize he grew up outside the continental U.S., but seriously -- how many errors and outright wrong statements does this gaffe-o-matic candidate get to make before he's no longer hailed as a Messiah, but recognized for the (very scary) joke he is?

This "issue" is far too minor to even being rated as "trivial".

If using the term "bomb" instead of "bombs" bothers you so much, what about McCain twice referring to Czechoslovakia in the last week (when Czechoslovakia hasn't existed in over 15 years)? What about McCain constantly getting confused about Shias and Sunnis and who's who in Iraq?

Get a life!

Oh, come on. Are you seriously criticizing this?!? For once, a presidential candidate is with the ability to move and impassion people. Unlike the current situation with Bush, which makes every high school drop out in the nation say, "Well damn, if this dumb ass can do it, maybe I can be President!" I will be proud to call Obama the next President of the United States. In fact, so will the rest of the world. By the way, has everyone forgotten what McCain's solution for Iran was, "Bomb, bomb, bomb, Bomb-bomb Iran (Beach Boys Barbara Ann)." Scary. But I guess we'll keep you in business as a War Journalist, so you are happy. Right?

The Democratic party as a whole is under a strong delusion. They have been for years to a degree, but never as we are seeing these days. What good can come from Obama? Look at how he has conducted himself. Yet they still desire him to be their President. Where are their morals? Do they have any?

In Christ,

It's a very tiny bit of history; I'm not surprised His Lightness of Cerebella knows about it. What He presumed was its common knowledge throughout the hoi polloi. The uninformed and ignorant ought to accept as a compliment His Lightness's belief that all Americans, left, right, center, sweet, sour, salty and bitter, the irreligious and the non-religious, the let goers and the Klingoners know who Pearl Harbor was ought not incline folks to predjudice. The Harbor Master at Pearl Harbor, one Sean Sweeney McGuinnis O'Flattery was very found of both his adopted country, (himself hailing from County Cork), the United States Navy, his second home, and, of all things, though not surprising, even though English, Jack Russell Terriers. His Jack Russell terrier, appropriately, was named after his duty station, "Pearl Harbor". "Pearl Harbor" hated the Japs with a fierceness the Bush-haters could only dream about at their nastiest, salivatingly-est, utmostness-est. "Pearl Harbor" took a bomb in the teeth saving the life of Mr. Sweeney McGuinnis O'Flattery. Curiously enough, Watanabe Kurishino Devlin, the Japanese pilot of the Zeke which dropped the Bomb on Pearl Harbor was a very distant cousin of Sweeney, his grandmother having been seduced, not unwillingly, by Mr. O'Flattery's step grandfather of the Shanghai merchant fleet at a stop in Yokohama in 1911. The story goes on, like Barak, somewhat interminably, with twists through Chinese hairpin makers, Korean dog breeders and obscure Christian churches in the Cook Islands. I know all this history well; Obama will stop at nothing to relearn history to us too. Change we cannot not disbelieve in.

The comments here are correct. Not only that they're referencing a "RUSH"ed transcript. He may have even said the "bombs". It's not uncommon for these sorts of transcripts to literally have 100 typos in them. If this is the best you can knock him for, well he must be doing really well.

Now if he said that it was the Vietnamese that dropped the bomb(s), that would be a different story. And frankly, much more likely to come from McCain.

I would like to see the video of this speech. You seem to be so all-knowing so you probaly did. Did you notice if Mr. Barack Hussien O'roadside-boma (Obama) was looking up at the crowd or posse or whatever it was or was he looking down when he made this mistake. My guess is that he had gotten into some rythmic sermon mode, was attempting to stike a Martin Luther or Bobby Kennedy pose, got wrapped up in his ego and forgot to read what the "smart people" had written for him to say, in other words, looking up. Mr. O'roadside-boma has mastered reading from the tele-prompter but without it he sounds like the bumbling idiot that his is, from a political stand point. A good example of the point I'm trying to make here can be found at johnmccain.com, The Obama Iraq Documentary. If you're willing to break out of your "I don't care, he's black or I don't care he reminds me of the sixties and I'm voting for him" mindset, you will notice the difference in his speaking ability or the difference in what he's told to say and what he believes, when he's looking up or down. Bottom line, Americans may be ready for a black President, but we're not ready for socialist of any color.

Sen. Obama keeps trying to invoke historical analogies, but in the process he only showcases his utter lack of American history. Misreading history is dangerous. Remember, he also thought that Kennedy's first meeting with Kruschev went well. Come on, Sen. Obama.

Well, hell, Jeff, remember when he said he'd campaigned in 57 states? He probably thinks DC and Guam are states. He's the latest of a dandied up, fast-talking hip dude that the Democrats always try to pass off as the common man. He and that ugly-ass wife of his have built their whole career on affirmative action and white liberal guilt. I'll vote for John MCcain three times if I can!

Obama is a joke, face it. The only thing more entertaining than watching him is to read all the pro-Obama comments. Fools!

Although Obama supporters characterize this as a trivial issue, here's exactly why it is a serious issue:

McCain's gaffes have been well documented by a media eager to portray him as out of touch. If McCain switches "Sunni" with "Shia" when speaking extemporaneously, the reporting hits all the networks.

But if Obama makes a gaffe? The media politely ignores it. This is particularly apparent when he is off-prompter, with his "errr, ummm, y'know, uhhhh..."

Why do you think that in a recent survey 67% of Americans think that the mainstream media wants to get Obama elected? His smug, disingenuous pandering is matched only by the slanted, disingenuous coverage from his fawning media minions.

"Throughout our history, America's confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Americans have adapted to the threats posed by an ever-changing world."

Probably Obama just had a slip of the tongue here or perhaps it's something more revealing.

Obviously, this is nothing I can prove, but I think Obama had a Freudian slip here. I think he's spent a lot more time in his life fretting over the U.S. dropping "a bomb" on Hiroshima and Nagasaki than the Japanese dropping bombs on Pearl Harbor. I'm not hear to debate the virtue of dropping the A-bomb (it is the anniversary eve of the Nagasaki bomb, right?) but Obama's slip might reveal his true passions. I don't think the man likes his country one bit.
